Dubai Customs issued statistics on the trade volume of flowers, live trees, seedlings, roots and bulbs which reached AED 71 million in the January-May 2011 period as opposed to around AED 63 million on the same period last year, that is by 12.6%.
The figures, issued by Dubai Customs’ department of statistics, showed that Dubai’s exports of flowers, bulbs, live trees and other live plants has witnessed a record percentage reaching 138.62% with AED 20 million as opposed to last year which reached around AED 8.3 million only. This increase indicates growth of the trade of flowers in the emirate.
Imports of these products, in the same period AED 49.16 million whereas re-exports amounted to AED 1.34 million.
Whereas the re-exporting activity valued at 1.34 million with a decreasing rate by 53.29% as opposed to the same period last year where it reached AED 2.87 million for the first five months of 2010.
As per the statistics, Netherlands topped the list of exporting countries of flowers and plants into Dubai with a value of AED 16.6 million (33.83% of Dubai imports for these products), followed by Kenya with a value AED 6.8 million by 13.83% and Thailand with AED 5.14 million (10.45%). These top three countries constituted a share of 58% of the total Dubai import rate for flowers and plants.
As for the top importing countries, Iraq came first on the list with a value of AED 14.15 million and 70.97%, India came second with AED 2.86 million and 14.36% and Egypt on the third spot with AED 1.18 million by 5.94%. Flowers and plants exports to these three countries had a share of 91.27% of the total Dubai export rate for flowers and plants.
As for the re-exporting list during January- May 2011, Kuwait came at the top with 29.69% , then Qatar with 22.59% and Iran with 19.40%. The three countries make a share of 71.68 % of the total re-exporting activity in Dubai.

It is worth mentioning that the international trade rate of flower kicked off in the last nineteenth century in England. Nowadays, the industry is nourishing across the world and growing largely. In the 50s of last century, the volume of this trade worldwide did not exceed $3 billion. By the year 1992, it jumped to reach over $100 billion and hit $101.84 billion, in the last years the trade volume amounted to 6% annually.
