Dubai Customs concluded the summer training program 2020 which targeted secondary school students (grades 11 and 12), and saw the participation of 1,179 students during July 5 to 30. The online practical and vocational training program was organized by the Customs Training Center in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, and consisted of 9 courses and workshops.

The participants were introduced to Dubai Customs role and mission in protecting society, supporting the economy and facilitating legitimate trade.

“The summer training program fulfills the vision of our wise leadership towards empowering high-school students, equipping them the necessary skills and knowledge to embark on career life, and promoting their sense of responsibility and good citizenship,” said Mohammed Al Ghafari, Acting Executive Director, Human Resources Division. “We delivered the program virtually through visual communication in line with the precautionary measures in place at Dubai Customs to curb the spread of Covid-19 pandemic.”

He further noted that this year’s summer training program was varied in terms of content as it engaged several departments and functions within Dubai Customs, including Corporate Communication, IPR, Innovation Center, Air Cargo Centers, and HR. The idea was to offer students a diverse and comprehensive knowledge to help them understand the nature of Dubai Customs’ work both in customs as well as non-customs areas.

The summer training program focused on helping students learn about the specific roles each department at Dubai Customs has, with the aim of equipping the students with different skills and preparing them for the world of work after graduation. Apart from the core functions of Dubai Customs in facilitation of legitimate trade and passenger movements, other topics covered included intellectual property, Dubai Customs as first line of defence, creative thinking and innovation, Dubai Customs as gateway to prosperity, CSR and communication crisis management, smart recruitment and talent acquisition.

Khamis Al Mehairi, lead trainer at the Customs Training Center, said the summer training sought to bridge the gap between education and the workplace and focused on equipping participants with necessary interpersonal and professional skillset, work ethics, and raised their awareness around other important aspects of career life.
