Dubai Customs Inspection Division Unveils Clever Smuggling Tactics, Fortifying Border Security

Dubai Customs proudly shines a spotlight on its recent extraordinary interceptions, a testament to the unwavering commitment of the first line of defense at Dubai's sea, air, and land entry points. These vigilant gatekeepers, armed with sharp skills and exceptional expertise, have brought to light significant contraband shipments.

Ingenious Smuggling Ploys

Dubai Customs, through its Customs Inspection division, has showcased remarkable vigilance and expertise in uncovering significant seizures as reported by the first line of defense. The department's highly skilled inspectors have demonstrated a strong commitment to security and a deep understanding of various smuggling techniques. The department successfully seized 956 bags of Captagon pills cleverly concealed within food items thanks to the cutting-edge equipment and enhanced monitoring and interception systems. Furthermore, they confiscated approximately 1.5 tons of methamphetamine, cleverly hidden in containers of coffee powder. Notably, an exceptionally precise seizure of opium was executed, with the prohibited substance concealed within fine threads, rendering detection extremely challenging. In addition, a stash of cocaine was discovered within a container labeled as protein.

Mohammed Al Ghaffari, Executive Director, Human Resources, Finance and Administration Division at Dubai Customs, highlighted the department's efforts in enhancing the capabilities of its inspectors through the Customs Training Center. This center plays a crucial role in providing specialized and professional training courses for inspectors. As of July 2023, more than 100 security courses have been conducted.

Al Ghaffari underscored their commitment to implementing top-tier training programs and systems adhering to the highest international standards. Notably, they employ a practical simulation system to train inspectors in identifying smuggling and concealment techniques using advanced X-ray detection devices at all customs ports in the emirate.

Furthermore, he explained that they enhance customs inspectors' skills and expertise through specialized courses in areas like criminology, risk management, border control, narcotics, and smuggling methods. They also conduct field training scenarios based on analyzed data to stay ahead of modern smuggling techniques, ultimately boosting the inspectors' ability to detect and seize illicit activities at sea, air, and land ports across the emirate.

The diligence of the department's personnel at customs ports, coupled with the sharp instincts of customs inspectors, has led to a significant discovery at Dubai Airport. Suspicion arose when a passenger arriving from an African country, en route to the inspection point, denied carrying any prohibited substances. Upon inspecting the passenger's luggage, customs officers found 2,256 grams of cocaine discreetly tucked away at the bottom of the bag and within the passenger's shoes.

The exceptional level of security awareness exhibited by customs inspectors at airports extends beyond this case. Another passenger arriving from an African country attracted attention due to her body language and unusual demeanor. Upon inspecting her luggage, customs officers uncovered 4,500 grams of cocaine ingeniously concealed within the buttons of her clothing, making detection a formidable challenge. Despite the bustling airport environment, customs inspectors remain alert and resolute in their determination to apprehend anyone attempting to smuggle prohibited substances.

Bolstering Border Security and Facilitation

Ibrahim Al Kamali, Director of Passenger Operations Department, emphasizes the impeccable alignment between Dubai Customs' strategic blueprint and the overarching aspiration of making Dubai the world's safest city. This resolute commitment also stands as a cornerstone of support for Dubai's economic agenda (D33), propelling the emirate's economic prowess and ensuring its enduring prosperity. Dubai is poised to solidify its stature among the premier global economic hubs.

Al Kamali elaborates on Dubai Customs' meticulously charted strategy for 2021 to 2026, a blueprint aimed at fortifying borders and fostering stakeholder contentment.

Addressing Dubai airport regulations, Al Kamali highlights the global significance of Dubai's airports, welcoming a diverse influx of passengers from various cultures and nations. This dynamic flow bolsters the nation's economy and its continuity. The role of customs inspectors, in this context, encompasses securing entry points while facilitating legitimate trade and travel—a harmonious balance of security and facilitation that remains integral.

Ingeniously concealed illicit substances were confiscated, arousing suspicion when a passenger from an African nation headed towards the inspection zone. While initially denying involvement in prohibited items, subsequent scrutiny revealed 2,256 grams of cocaine concealed at the base of a bag and discreetly tucked within a shoe. Another passenger, hailing from an African country, carried 4,500 grams of cocaine, meticulously hidden among the buttons of clothing within her personal luggage.

Even amid the bustling traveler traffic, customs inspectors stand resolute, diligently monitoring any attempts to illicitly transport contraband substances.

First Line Ready to Counter Prohibited Materials

At the heart of Dubai's customs success lies the Customs Training Center, an essential force in empowering the first-line customs inspectors. Through specialized professional training courses, these inspectors are equipped with knowledge and expertise aligned with real-world customs operations. Accomplished trainers bring their extensive experience to deliver practical insights. The center adopts cutting-edge training systems, notably the "Symfox" analytical tool, simulating smuggling and concealment techniques through X-ray scanning devices at all customs checkpoints.

Inspectors further enhance their skills through specialized courses in advanced body language and spatial training, bolstered by real-world scenarios derived from previous seizures. These efforts have amplified the efficiency of customs inspectors, equipping them to accurately identify suspicious activities and make seizures across diverse entry points.
