Unveiling Dubai Customs' eco-friendly arsenal: a sustainable approach to customs inspection
Dubai Customs places a strong emphasis on supporting environmental sustainability by launching initiatives and projects that aim to create a safe, sustainable, and healthy environment. This commitment reflects their dedication to fostering individual and societal happiness, while also ensuring the occupational safety of their human resources. Dubai Customs aligns its projects and initiatives with the UAE's environmental protection efforts, which have made remarkable progress.
Additionally, Dubai Customs has successfully implemented the "Dubai Paperless Strategy," introduced by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council. This strategy has earned them the prestigious "100% Paperless" seal.
Furthermore, at the beginning of this year, the government department launched the Green Customs initiative, which stands as an international collaborative model to combat the illicit trafficking of environmentally harmful substances. This initiative focuses on enhancing the capabilities of customs inspectors and relevant employees in monitoring, licensing, and controlling hazardous materials, waste, as well as endangered plant and animal species. These efforts align with the Year of Sustainability and the UAE's significant role in hosting the upcoming Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) from November 30th to December 12th of this year.
Dubai Customs places a strong emphasis on supporting sustainability and environmental preservation through its customs inspection sector. One notable example is the Technical Support Department building in Warsan, Dubai, which stands as a remarkable green structure. This facility not only provides a safe and healthy environment for inspectors but also houses essential resources for inspection processes, including mobile devices and the Customs Canine Unit (K9).
Responding to Dubai Customs' specific requirements and standards, they have introduced a groundbreaking X-ray scanning system at the seaport. This innovative system is the first of its kind globally and enables comprehensive inspections of heavy and light vehicles, large equipment, and yachts. By optimizing efficiency and increasing inspection capacity, this cutting-edge technology significantly supports various industries, such as construction and manufacturing.
In addition, the vehicle inspection device deployed at the land border crossing is thoughtfully designed and equipped with specialized features. It ensures the utmost safety of personnel during inspection procedures by minimizing the potential impact of radiation. This meticulous approach guarantees a secure environment with a safety rating of 100%.
One notable step is the utilization of eco-friendly electric vehicles to assist the Customs Investigations Unit (Siyaj). These vehicles efficiently navigate tight spaces during cargo inspections and expedite customer clearance processes, resulting in heightened satisfaction among both internal and external stakeholders. Furthermore, they are equipped to transport the Customs Canine Unit (K9).
In line with their commitment to environmental responsibility, Dubai Customs has introduced the innovative Green Bag concept. This initiative focuses on studying radiation patterns within the customs area to calibrate X-ray detection devices according to their thermal characteristics. Additionally, a thermal zone map is developed to safeguard the environment across all customs areas.
Meanwhile, the Administrative Affairs Department at Dubai Customs actively promotes sustainability measures. They embrace green building practices and spearhead initiatives like the "Environmental Guardians" program, encouraging staff members to actively participate in plastic waste recycling and environmental preservation endeavors. The department also launched an initiative to assess the environmental health and safety conditions of customs centers, striving to achieve environmental security, sustainable development, and a healthy ecosystem. Dubai Customs maintains a steadfast adherence to a well-defined health and safety policy across all its customs centers.
