Dubai Customs Develops a New Training Portfolio on Maritime Trade Law

October 27, 2013

The Customs Training Center developed  a new training portfolio, in coordination with the Legal Affairs Department at Dubai Customs.
The training portfolio aims to build staff capacity and develop their competencies in regards to the understanding and enforcement of maritime trade law.
As part of this training portfolio, Dubai Customs staff are expected to be able to work competitively in view of the fluctuations that are typical  of the international trade scene.
This training will contribute to the regulation of maritime activities and their relations and transactions in relevance to international trade;  for example, the training will contribute to the regulation of efficient and high quality maritime transport operations.
Moreover, the training portfolio will empower the trainees to overcome the obstacles which hinder international maritime activities, and will also confer upon them the privilege of supporting  legal trade through the protection of the country’s ports.
Mrs. Feryal Tawakul, Director of the Dubai Customs Training Center Department, explicated that the launch of this training portfolio on maritime trade law comes as part of the Department’s response to the training needs of the staff. Specifically, the training portfolio intends to enable the staff to overcome the challenges and make well-informed decisions in regards to interaction with clients and partners in a business environment regulated and controlled by international trade law.
This new training program is part of the center’s strategic plan, which aims to achieve the goals of Dubai Customs through the enrichment of the staff’s knowledge and the development of their capacities. The training will also help the staff to perform their daily tasks based on a comprehensive understanding of customs work and related legislation and laws.
Mrs. Tawakul pointed out that the training portfolio on maritime trade law introduced a large array of legal concepts and procedures that are used to regulate the international maritime trade relations.
Those concepts include the maritime trade law and its origins, the definition of ships and the global navigation, maritime navigation personnel, and maritime contracts.
The training portfolio consists of three main sections: the Trainer Package, the Trainee Package and the Pre and Final Tests; in order to facilitate the practical application of the concepts and subjects taught in the training program within a customs work environment.
Faisal Al Haddad, a prominent employee in the Legal Affairs Department, was honored for his initiative to establish the training portfolio, in the presence of Mrs. Narmin Issa, Director of Legal Affairs Department, and Dr. Sheikha Al Ghafri, (Acting) Director of  the Customs Training Centre.
