Dubai Customs inaugurated WIPO World IP Day 2013 celebration by organizing a workshop on awareness about protection of intellectual property rights.
The 3 day workshop scheduled to take place between 22 and 24 April 2013 in which 31 agencies and organizations from public and private sectors are taking part, is the second of its kind to be held by Dubai Customs this year and the 19th of the series of education workshops aiming at enhancing awareness about intellectual property rights and training the appropriate staff within all organizations on protecting such rights and confronting attempts to counterfeit products and manipulate with trademarks.
“Awareness about intellectual property rights and ways of protecting them is one of the activities that we undertake to ensure involvement of all society segments in confronting counterfeited products and commercial fraud in such a way that will consolidate our role in challenging all bids to smuggle goods infringing upon traders and producers` rights”, said Yousef Al Kaj, Director of Intellectual Property Department at Dubai Customs.
The workshops provide an adequate opportunity for interaction among different IPR operators at different government organizations with major brand owners and during which practical training on detecting counterfeited products and combating forgery of trademarks is conducted for promoting industry operators` efficiency and improving their capability of encountering attempts to infringe intellectual property rights.
The list of government agencies and organizations taking part in the workshop include Ministry of Economy, National Media Council, Sharjah Customs, Ras Al Khaima Customs, Fujairah Customs, Ajman Customs, Jebel Ali Free Zone (JAFZA) and Dubai Customs.
A group of major trademarks are taking part as well including without limitation; Microsoft, Apple & Cisco, HP, Samsung, Toyota, Nissan, Christian Louboutin, Chanel and Nike, Life Scan, Unilever, Nikon and Bioderma.
All participants are set to be honoured at the closing ceremony of the workshop.
Dubai Customs was keen over the past years to expand its activities towards combating infringement on intellectual property rights through its direct role in prohibiting entry of counterfeited products into Dubai or transiting to other markets by improving inspectors` efficiency and providing them with the highest skills and technologies capable of detecting such products and foiling their smuggling.
