Dubai Customs launches AI Hakathon to develop new disruptive customs system

Dubai Customs, first 100% smart government department, launched AI Hakathon contest with the aim of innovating and developing systems and programs that help improve services and further automate customs procedures in fulfillment of the UAE AI strategy and the post smart government era.
This will contribute towards better services and infrastructure in the UAE in accordance with the expectations of the UAE Centennial 2071 project.
Registration for programmers, developers and college students is open on Dubai Customs corporate website (www.dubaicustoms.gov.ae) from 2nd to 5th September 2019, and projects will be received at the email: Hakathon@dubaicustoms.ae, from 8th to 14th September. Winners will be awarded in Gitex Technology Week 2019, with a cash prize of AED 10,000 for the winner, AED 5,000 for the first runner up, and AED 3,000 for the second runner up.


“We are happy to launch Dubai Customs AI Hakathon as it will shed light on the horizons and opportunities unfolded by the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and how to benefit from them,” Ahmed Mahboob Musabih, Director General of Dubai Customs said. “This will definitely help in developing customs services and procedures, and supports our vision of becoming the leading customs administration in the world supporting legitimate trade. Keeping abreast with the latest technology goes in line with the directives of our wise leadership which inspires us to apply the UAE AI strategy and meet the expectations of the UAE Centennial 2071. All these efforts will accelerate development relying 100% on artificial intelligence by 2031.


“Dubai Customs has passionately endorsed the Eight Principles of Governance and the articles of the 50-Year Charter, which have been announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai. We expect heated competition between programmers, and the results will support our strategy in building the first virtual trade zone in the region and the Dubai Silk Road”. 

 



 
Juma Al Ghaith, Executive Director of Customs Development Division at Dubai Customs pointed out that the Dubai Customs AI Hakathon will invest in the talent pool, entice young people towards more innovations and explore significant opportunities introduced by the 4th Industrial Revolution.


“This will also help us deliver best solutions to our clients. The Customs Development Division has introduced groundbreaking disruptive projects such as the Mirsal 2, Smart Work Space, iDeclare, and the Smart Risk Engine” said Al Ghaith.
He added that a committee from Customs Development Division has been formed to receive nominated projects and select the winners.
