Dubai Customs has released a book entitled “Highlights on Intellectual Property Rights” to enlighten clients, stakeholders and other segments of society to the IP laws in the UAE which include rights of producers of books, music, art, movies, IT programs, maps and technical drawings. Intellectual property rights also include patents, trademarks, industrial designs and information related to place of origin of products and goods.

Readers will learn different terms used in intellectual property fields, and the precautionary measures taken by the UAE to protect the rights of innovators in all fields.
Dubai Customs strictly prohibits and fights counterfeiting through all of its centers and believes protection of Intellectual property is critical to fostering innovation. Without protection of ideas, businesses and individuals would not reap the full benefits of their inventions and would focus less on research and development.
“The book has information about the history and formation of the Intellectual Property Department at Dubai Customs,” Author of the book, Mahbooba Baqer, Awareness and Education Manager said. “It’s the first of its kind among government departments in the middle east. The department started work in 2005 following international standards and regulations. We have a data base that includes details of registered trademarks which are recorded for customs control and protection purposes. We also have noticeable efforts in raising awareness around the importance of protecting rights of intellectual property. It’s very important everyone knows about the hazards of counterfeiting on society, economy and health and integrity of individuals”.
One of the initiatives taken forward by the department was the IP Award for schools and universities which started in 2007 and has targeted around 198,000 students in 177 schools and 33 universities so far.”
The book is available in Arabic and English on Dubai Customs corporate website.
